To the southeast is the Cook County Forest Preserve, located on the banks of Thorn Creek and adjacent to an artificial reservoir that was created in the 1950s during the construction of the nearby I-80 highway.
The land has a rich history dating back thousands of years to when it was home to Native Americans. Archaeological excavations indicate the existence of a village in the 14th century that had more than 2,000 inhabitants.
For visitors, Lake Wampum is a popular fishing destination, as it is home to many bluegills, largemouth bass, goby, and crappie.
To the south of the preserve is a large nature preserve area with scenic trails that wind through oak-hickory forests along Thorn Creek and its tributary North Creek. Visitors can enjoy the scenic nature and observe the diversity of wildlife in this beautiful region.
